Hand-crafted glass jewelry by Kate McCallum
Karen at Home

"Us" is mostly just "me" in my farmhouse kitchen in Exeter, NH - with a lot of help from my long-suffering husband Alex, as well as family and friends. I've traveled all over the world during the course of my 35 years as a professional tournament bridge player, and the diverse cultural experiences have influenced my jewelry designs.

All of my beaded necklaces are individually hand-crafted using either Czech glass or Japanese Miyuki glass - the best seed beads available. I use the highest quality materials I can find, and I search everywhere I go for unusual beads and findings so that the finished pieces will truly be one-of-a-kind. I also use semi-precious stones from around the world, e.g. rare Tibetan turquoise, labradorite from Canada, red Jasper from Turkey and West German antique glass. And my eight months in Turkey, much of it spent savoring the colorful bazaars of Istanbul, have filled my head with design ideas (take a look at the Ancient Istanbul collection).

The unusual lampwork beads which are the focal point of many of my necklaces are hand-fired over a torch, using a mandrel and a glass rod, by artists all over the world, from upstate New York to Australia and Hong Kong.

My beading helpers are frequently Romanian students who spend the summers with my family, and their input lends another exotic and unusual touch to many of the necklaces. (A few special necklaces are made by "our" Romanians: Dana, Vera & Adina…)

Recently, my youngest daughter, Justine, has caught the beading bug too, and a few of her unusual designs are now a part of the Copperfield Bazaar collection.

Alex (the long-suffering husband) does all the marketing and public relations for Copperfield Bazaar. If you call you'll probably find him - he's also the phone man. But you can speak with me if you ask him nicely. Alex also does all the shipping, i.e., the endless treks to the post office thru the New Hampshire snow. In other words, he does all the hard work while I have all the fun creating at the beading table.

And last but not least, my incredible friend Kitty (Open Sky Web Design) created this website for us, and continues to keep it running and functioning properly.

I'm happy to make a custom design for you if you have something in mind that you don't see here. Extenders are available in several lengths, and in a variety of metal finishes, so that you can lengthen any necklace that has a metal clasp. (I can also try to lengthen necklaces or bracelets that have self-loop-and-bead clasps, but I may not have the beads anymore...) On the other hand, if you want it shorter, that's easy - I'll be happy to do it for you. Matching earrings and bracelets can be made for most pieces as well. Just ask.

I guarantee all of my work for life - if it ever breaks please send it back to me and I'll fix it for you free of charge. I'll even pay the postage. (Sorry, I can't guarantee the glass - glass breaks if you drop it!)
